The recent blizzard in New England was the result of a warm surge from the south moving north along the coast, meeting a cold surge from the Canadian Plains. These types of storms are difficult to predict very far in advance and don't actually often show up on upper level charts when they occur because they are not a classically formed storm. They result in the chance meeting of air masses in particular time frames as they move across the continent. However, the tendency for these types of storms occurring in the Northeast this year was predicted by Doc Weather in the fall.
